What is Neuropsychological Testing?

Neuropsychological testing is an in-depth assessment that evaluates various aspects of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functioning. These evaluations help uncover underlying factors that may be affecting learning, memory, attention, processing speed, and executive functioning.

This type of testing can be beneficial for:

  • Identifying learning disabilities (such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, or dysgraphia)

  • Gaining accommodations for standardized tests (e.g., SAT, LSAT, GMAT)

  • Seeking disability benefits from the state

  • Accessing special education services and support plans

  • Diagnosing ADHD, autism, or other neurodevelopmental conditions

Neuropsychological vs. Psychoeducational Testing – What’s the Difference?

These terms are often used interchangeably. However, a psychoeducational evaluation typically focuses on learning and academic-related concerns, while a neuropsychological evaluation offers a broader picture of brain functioning, including attention, memory, language, and problem-solving skills. I will tailor the evaluation to meet your specific needs.

Why is Neuropsychological Testing Important for Adults?

Many adults seek neuropsychological evaluations for academic accommodations or standardized testing accommodations (such as the SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT, and more). This type of evaluation is also used to seek disability benefits from the state.

If you or your child struggle with test-taking due to ADHD, a learning disability, or other cognitive challenges, an evaluation can help document these difficulties and provide formal recommendations for accommodations such as:
✔️ Extra time on exams
✔️ A quiet testing environment
✔️ The ability to take breaks or use assistive technology

Neuropsychological Testing for Children – An Investment in Their Future

As a parent, it’s difficult to hear that your child is struggling—but early identification of learning, attention, or developmental challenges can be life-changing. A neuropsychological evaluation provides a roadmap to help your child reach their full potential by uncovering strengths and challenges in key areas such as:

  • Cognitive functioning (IQ, problem-solving, reasoning)

  • Academic abilities (reading, writing, math)

  • Executive functioning (attention, impulse control, organization)

  • Social-emotional development (mood, anxiety, behavior regulation)

Why Early Testing Matters

Many parents hope their child will “catch up” on their own, but waiting can lead to frustration and missed opportunities for intervention. Research shows that early intervention can significantly improve long-term outcomes, especially for children with conditions like ADHD, autism, or learning disabilities.

A neuropsychological evaluation is more than just a diagnosis—it provides:
- A better understanding of your child’s learning style
- Personalized strategies to help them thrive in school and life
- Guidance for teachers, therapists, and caregivers
- Access to special education services and academic accommodations
- A baseline to track progress over time

By investing in your child’s neuropsychological evaluation now, you are giving them the tools to build confidence, reduce frustration, and develop lifelong skills that will serve them well into adulthood.

The Evaluation Process – What to Expect

Our testing process is designed to be as seamless and comfortable as possible. Here's how it works:

Step 1: Diagnostic interview & Background Review

I will meet with you (or your child and family) to discuss concerns, gather background history, and determine which assessments are most appropriate. Any previous evaluations, school records, or relevant medical history can help guide this process. Parents and teachers will be asked to fill out some questionnaires.

Step 2: Standardized Testing Sessions

Testing involves a series of standardized tasks, puzzles, problem-solving exercises, and questionnaires. The assessment may evaluate:

  • Cognitive Functioning – IQ, reasoning, problem-solving

  • Academic Skills – Reading, writing, and math

  • Executive Functioning – Attention, organization, impulse control

  • Memory & Learning – How information is processed and retained

  • Emotional & Social Functioning – Mood, behavior, and social interactions

Sessions typically range from 6 to 8 hours, but can be broken up over multiple days to ensure comfort and accuracy.

Step 3: Feedback & Comprehensive Report

Once the evaluation is complete, I will carefully analyze the results and compile a detailed, easy-to-understand report. This report will include:
✔️ Clear explanations of strengths and challenges
✔️ A diagnosis (if applicable)
✔️ Personalized recommendations for school, work, or daily life
✔️ Guidance on next steps, including therapy, accommodations, or intervention plans

I take the time to ensure each report is thorough, practical, and meaningful, offering actionable steps for moving forward. Reports are typically completed within 2 to 3 weeks after testing.
